John's Trading Club

John Forman - Author of The Essentials of Trading, 20 year Trading & Market Analysis VeteranWelcome to my trading club!

My name is John Forman. Think of me as a fellow adventurer on your quest for trading success. :-)

If you don’t know me, here’s the skinny.

I am what most folks would consider a veteran. You may have come across my work somewhere along the way as I’ve written numerous magazine articles, done webcasts, talked at a seminar to two, and contributed to a number of websites. I’ve been in the markets for over 20 years, having opened my first stock brokerage account shortly after the Crash in 1987.

In the time since then I have traded just about everything individual traders are likely to trade, though mostly I’ve focused on individual stocks, index futures, and forex. I’m also a professional market analyst, currently working in forex, though with equity and fixed income experience as well, plus a bit of energy markets time tossed in for flavor.

The Essentials of TradingAll the trading and writing about the markets aside, though, education is my real passion. It’s been a part of my life for a long time, most obviously through the volleyball coaching I’ve done (high school, club and collegiate). My book, The Essentials of Trading (Wiley, 2006), came out of my desire to inform people and help them in their development and growth. People keep telling me the book is really helpful, so I guess I’m on the right track. :-)

My Trading Club is about extending my trading educational efforts and taking them more directly to those who can use them. The idea is to find a happy ground between the straight out instruction of something like a book or course, which I’ve done, and the one-on-one coaching/mentoring, which limits the number of people I can help and which is a major challenge given my schedule.

While the Club certainly offers a number of informational resources like ebooks and videos, the feature element of it all from my perspective is the “look over my shoulder” aspect. I know from the feedback I’ve received that this is something a lot of folks could really use to help them bridge the gap from knowledge of methods and techniques to the ability to employ them effectively for themselves.

Here’s the areas of focus I will have for the Club.

Foreign Exchange
Because I work for a group who’s focus is on intraday real-time forex market analysis and commentary, I cannot do anything for the club in that regard. I can, however, do some work that is more swing to position timeframe oriented. Please note, however, that the charting and volatility analysis techniques I employ are mostly the same regardless of timeframe. I can also discuss strategies based on the calendar patterns in the forex market, of which I have done considerable research.

Individual Stocks
I am what could be called a swing to position trader where stocks are concerned. That means the positions I take are ones that I expect to hold for weeks, though sometimes they only last days and other times they last months. I combine technical and fundamental analysis. I also look to play the options rather than the shares, but the general trade idea comes from the stock, so one could follow my strategies in either direction.

Stock Index Futures
My index trading is mostly day oriented, though sometimes there can be carry-over positions. I focus mainly on the S&Ps, and use techniques based on price/volume distribution analysis (also known as Market Profile and some other names). With it I identify the key price areas and develop high risk/reward strategies. The expectation for  one trade per day.
